The Mac is mine now · 111 days ago

When ordering my MacBook Air, Apple claimed that it would ship within 24 hours. Impatient as I am, I sent a mail when it had been around 30, asking what was happening. They replied, telling me that each item would be shipped from their respective warehouses within 24 hours, then meet up at a central place, and finally be sent to my place, and that this process would probably take 24 more hours. Then, five hours later, they changed the estimated shipping time to “1-2 weeks” instead of “within 24 hours”, so I sent another mail, asking for an explanation for this.

Never got a reply, so after a day, I cancelled the order. Went down to a Apple-dealer in the neighbor-town, which, as it turns out, had one MacBook Air left in the entire store. This was exactly the model I had ordered, so I bought it.

I am now therefore the proud owner of a MacBook Air, and am using it to type this entry. The store was a bit more expensive than ordering online, but since I actually received it, I felt it was worth the extra money.

Been arguing with the keyboard working together with Terminal.app and my other machines, but it’s now only switching windows in irssi that’s complicated, and I can live with that, since I plan on finding a proper IRC client later on.

A Mac! · 114 days ago

Finally got some money, and so I ran off to the nearest Apple-store (online of course), and purchased myself a MacBook Air.

So now I’m constantly refreshing the tracking page, waiting for it to be sent. Expected to be delivered between Friday 19th and Tuesday 23rd.

Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!

Still no iEye.
Still not finished with Rye.
Still no recent updates here.
Still no switching between PulseAudio and SPDIF in my TV-script, so mplayer still requires exclusive access to the audio.
Still no proper /home in SVN (or Git).
Still no regular exercise.

I feel like there’s so much I have planned to do, but that I just can’t get around to doing. No matter what. These things have been on my list for ages, and I want to get it done soon.

But instead, I waste time watching movies and tv-series, reading blogs, reading discussions on forums, and everything except the things I would like to get done.

warm · 164 days ago

All of a sudden, summer is upon us. I’m walking around nearly naked, fan on 24/7, and the door open most of the time. It’s almost unbearably hot here. The dog has moved into the basement with me, since the basement is the coolest place in the house right now.

So what do we do then? We watch The Dark Knight. Twice. It rocked! One of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. If going to the cinema wasn’t so expensive, I might have seen it one more time already. But now I think I’ll just wait for the DVD (or Blu-Ray).

The people I was working for decided to hire me for a month, until the school starts, so then I have a full-time job to a more “normal” pay, and after that, I can work part-time helping with stuff.

Finally, been reading Getting Real, and enjoying it. Should absolutely learn something here. Just get some other things out of the way, and I’ll start on iEye, and actually making something out of it this time. As they say, ideas are worthless.

Just started working today. Only Flash (ActionScript 3) for now, but possibly some PHP and sysadmin-tasks as well later on.

The Bad Things:

  • Travelling there takes a long time. Think I might try to work from home instead, if that’s possible.
  • No Subversion/Git/CVS/Mercurial/Some other SCM
  • No bugtracker (that I know of)

The Good Things:

  • The code isn’t The Daily WTF-material (yet)
  • I’ll actually make some money, so I can afford things I want
  • It’s interesting work
  • Should be possible to convince them to add a bugtracker and/or some SCM
  • Had to sign an NDA just to look at their code. Makes it seem so much more secrety and fun.

Finished my last exam yesterday (only had two). But that means that it’s finally vacation. Don’t have a job, and haven’t been looking for one, which means that until the end of August, I’m free to do whatever I feel like :)

I have lots of plans for things to do, mainly projects I’ve been delaying and delaying. First, we will finish the last revisions, and start on the special. That is something we’ve been delaying far too long now. The people are waiting! (At least someone is.)

Then I need to upgrade my router, angband, to OpenBSD 4.3 and replace a half-working network card that’ll probably boost the performance for the poor WLAN-users in this house. Thinking about maybe using it as a WLAN access point as well, so that I can finally get rid of that shitty WLAN-thingy we use now.

Was planning to move from qmail to Postfix as well, but instead, I moved it over to Google Apps. Less work for me, and everything works great. POP and IMAP available, and I trust Google to keep things working and up a bit more than myself. So now I can actually use my mail for more serious things.

A new waste of time · 276 days ago

Just when I was getting things done, and it seemed like I wasn’t going to have trouble keeping getting things done, I had to find another time waster. And this is a bad one.

A few friends came over yesterday, and they brough Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which is suprisingly fun. We started building, and before any of us knew it, seven hours had passed.

I am totally incapable of building a proper railroad junction needed for some linking of railroads and making things effective, and part of the fun was to just try to fix it by randomly adding tracks and signals, eventually turning it into unmaintainable crap that wouldn’t go anywhere, and would trap every train that accidentally stumbled upon it.

Great fun, and this could probably make me waste countless hours before I finally escape. Luckily it runs in a window, and can be paused whenever, so I might manage to sneak in some productive work inbetween the construction.

Vacation · 323 days ago

This week is vacation week. No school to attend. And so therefore, I thought that this was a good opportunity to see the world by going somewhere else. So I went to my grandparents.

The journey took something like twelve hours. Train to Oslo went at 8.13 am. Bus from Oslo 10 am. Bus arrived at the final stop 7.30 pm. We arrived at our destination around 8 pm. Too bad my iPod only lasted for four and a half hour. Silly Rockbox. So most of the way was spent staring out of the window, sleeping or reading.

It’s been raining like crap since we arrived, so I haven’t had a chance to go outside yet. Just started charging my iPod, so when it stops, I’m ready!

Demolition Man · 333 days ago

Been a few days since the last post. Already starting to lose interest. It was fun for as long as it lasted.

Our home is being remodeled. Started yesterday, and will probably continue for a few months at least. Two bathrooms, one upstairs, and one down in my basement. Plumber comes on monday, and by then, we have to have ripped out everything, including walls and floor, so that everything can be fixed properly. And that is a lot of work.

This house is full of funny ways of doing things, and excessive use of nails, screws and bricks. The bathtub was actually supported not only by it’s legs, but also by a solid brick wall underneath it. It could probably have supported a horse without moving an inch.

I’ve been running around for hours now, picking up small rocks, tiles, planks and other crap that were pulled off the walls and floor, moving it outside. And I’m tired. I’m not made for physical work.

Luckily there was a rumour about some waffles being made soon. Gonna grab a stack and lie down on the couch, watching something. That’ll be good.
